ALCOBAÇA – HISTORY and GASTRONOMY (Full Day)

We begin our visit through the Levadas of the Monastery of Alcobaça, a walk through the old hydraulic system that played an important role in the implementation and development of the Abbey of Alcobaça.

Following the Levadas, we arrived at the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, or Royal Abbey of Santa Maria one of the first Cistercian monastic foundations in Portuguese territory, and its construction began in 1178 by the Cistercian monks. It is currently classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Typical lunch with conventual sweets degustation.

After lunch we will make a quick visit to the ruins of the Castle of Alcobaça, whose origin generates some controversy from where we can enjoy a beautiful view over the city, including its famous monastery, the surrounding fields and the Sierra de Candeeiros.

We continue our visit to the National Wine Museum, a Portuguese museum dedicated to wine and vineyards, which holds the largest and richest national treasure in the country.

Remaining in the wine theme we leave to Quinta dos Capuchos, to visit the vineyard, wine cellar and 3 wines with appetizers degusttion. With a 11 hectare vineyard, it pursues the mission of producing high quality wines – recovering the wine traditions of Alcobaça. Return
